Carpal Tunnel
Carpal tunnel is a chronic condition which is increasing in occurrence today in western society mainly due to an increase in office jobs requiring prolonged use of a computer due to constant typing. Individuals develop carpal tunnel syndrome due to compression of the median nerve at the wrist.
Causes and Risk Factors:
- Having a small carpal tunnel
- Affects Women for than men (possibly due to women having a smaller tunnel)
- Repetitive hand movements (example: secretary work, hairdresser, mechanic,)
- Certain conditions such as: Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Hypothyroidism
Signs and Symptoms:
- Numbness and tingling in the hand and fingers
- Dull, sharp or shooting pain in the hand
- Swelling in the hand
- Weakness in the hand
Treatment:
- Stretching regiment daily
- Wrist strengthening
- Soft tissue and Manual Therapy
- Night splint
- Icing
